You don’t say these any more, but we had to register: espássaro instead of espaço, boboteca instead of biblioteca.

Happy New York
That’s what you told Papa on the phone from the hotel room in Chicago when Nonna told you to say Happy New Year. 🙂

English workshop
We are in Michigan at Nonna’s house this week and it has been an English workshop for you. All of a sudden you went from single words to sentences – what’s that? What color is that? What are you doing? are the most used ones. I couldn’t possibly keep track of the language explosion this week, you are learning at such a speed, it’s pretty amazing. I guess you will know quite a bit of English when you start preschool in the Fall.

More English
You just said to Tati: I’m mad, really mad. Then you crossed your arms, waited a few seconds and said: Now I’m happy.
Where are you learning these things????

Many words in English
You have been picking up a lot of words in English these days, we don’t even know where, we just keep being blown away when you use them all of a sudden in the right context. Examples: fast, thank you, you’re welcome, hug, happy, sad, see you later, my cup, my shoe, love you, get you, cat, dog, boat, bird, monkey, water, park, numbers 1-10, several colors, the ABC song… I’m sure I’m forgetting a bunch. It will be interesting when you start preschool in the Fall!

Long sentences
You were playing with some kitchen utensils while I put away groceries. I asked if you were going to put the utensils in the cabinets and you said “no, I will put them in the bag” (nao, eu vou botar na bolsa). You have been using “I” (eu) more often.

Sentences?
You said your “first” sentence today – “Lava a mão” (wash (the) hand). You were having dinner and your hand was covered in beans, since you had been picking up one by one during the meal. You looked at it and said “dodói” (hurt) and I said it wasn’t hurt, it was just dirty, to what you replied “lava a mão”. Let’s see if you will start combining words into sentences from now on or if this was another one off (like when you said “water, daddy” many months ago).

17 months
Today you turned 17 months old. You have been going to bed easier for the past month, and for the past week you actually asked to go to bed (“mimi”). I sit in one of the chairs in your room (and it has to be the same chair, or you will complain), you lay on my chest and you look at me and smile hundreds of times until you actually fall asleep. Sometimes you ask for your stuffed animals (“au au”, “urso” and “coeio”) and hug them all. But you still wake up at 5 AM every day, sometimes 5:30, sometimes 4:30. You nurse and then cuddle with me in bed until 7 AM. We’re trying to stop this but you get really mad at us. You are talking so much these days, we’re waiting for when you will start putting words together to make sentences any day now. You learn new words every day. Today you were saying (76) quente (hot), (77) braço (arm), (78) perna (leg), (79) beio (beijo/kiss). You still fight to take naps, you cry and whine and almost falls asleep while standing but don’t we dare say “mimi” or try to put you in bed or in the couch. Usually we take you for a stroller ride and you fall asleep really quickly, and you sleep there for an hour or two. We’re glad we bought the stroller that lays completely flat! You LOVE playing outside, if you could, you would be outside all day long. Even now, during the winter, you spend half of your day playing on the back or front yard. You go crazy when you see the neighbor’s kids running around and you demand we take you there too (points at the door while repeating “abre! abre! abre!” (open) over and over again). Your favorite food is hummus, you ask for it many times a day “aimussss”. And the #1 dessert is ice cream, vanilla. Chocolate pudding or strawberry ice cream don’t even get a close second.
