Independent
You go to the bathroom by yourself 100% (for pee). You put most of your shoes on without help (except strappy sandals). You can brush your teeth alone. You want to help us cook, set the table, put groceries away, do the laundry and load the dishwasher. You eat by yourself (has been doing that for years).

Completely potty trained
You decided not to wear pull ups anymore, put your underwear on and had no accidents even going to the pool. You asked to get out of the pool and pee 3 times, you were totally in control. We consider you now officially potty trained.

3 (or 4) new teeth!
You were laughing today and I thought I saw a new tooth poking through your lower left gum and kept trying to see it all day. After we brushed your teeth we were telling you to open your mouth wide (say aaaaaah) and you were doing it, so we actually found 3 (maybe 4) new teeth poking out! Wow! No wonder you have been cranky and waking up at night for the past few days. Your teeth are always soooo slow to come out that we never know if you are teething or not (it literally takes months and months that we can see the tooth making its way out before cutting through). So there is a 4th tooth at the top and numbers 5, 6 and maybe 7 on the bottom.

17 months
Today you turned 17 months old. You have been going to bed easier for the past month, and for the past week you actually asked to go to bed (“mimi”). I sit in one of the chairs in your room (and it has to be the same chair, or you will complain), you lay on my chest and you look at me and smile hundreds of times until you actually fall asleep. Sometimes you ask for your stuffed animals (“au au”, “urso” and “coeio”) and hug them all. But you still wake up at 5 AM every day, sometimes 5:30, sometimes 4:30. You nurse and then cuddle with me in bed until 7 AM. We’re trying to stop this but you get really mad at us. You are talking so much these days, we’re waiting for when you will start putting words together to make sentences any day now. You learn new words every day. Today you were saying (76) quente (hot), (77) braço (arm), (78) perna (leg), (79) beio (beijo/kiss). You still fight to take naps, you cry and whine and almost falls asleep while standing but don’t we dare say “mimi” or try to put you in bed or in the couch. Usually we take you for a stroller ride and you fall asleep really quickly, and you sleep there for an hour or two. We’re glad we bought the stroller that lays completely flat! You LOVE playing outside, if you could, you would be outside all day long. Even now, during the winter, you spend half of your day playing on the back or front yard. You go crazy when you see the neighbor’s kids running around and you demand we take you there too (points at the door while repeating “abre! abre! abre!” (open) over and over again). Your favorite food is hummus, you ask for it many times a day “aimussss”. And the #1 dessert is ice cream, vanilla. Chocolate pudding or strawberry ice cream don’t even get a close second.

3 new teeth
You have one tooth coming on the bottom, right next to your front one, and two coming on the top, also next to the existing ones. I can feel the tip of 2 of them that have cut through, and the 3rd one on the top hasn’t cut through yet.

One more tooth
Finally the upper right front tooth that has been bothering you for over a week has cut through. This morning when you got up I could see the edge of it. Now you have 4 teeth!

Bending down and Standing Up
Today you bent down and stood up all by yourself. You can pick things up that are on the floor and stand back up without using furniture.

Clapping hands!
After months of training, you started clapping your hands today, the day before your birthday party! You keep doing it every once in a while, you stand holding a toy then let go of the toy and clap your hands for a little bit. So cute! This whole week you were almost doing it right, you kept one hand opened flat while the other hand was half closed, and today you figured it out. I don’t think you will clap your hands when we sing happy birthday during your party tomorrow, just because you will be surprised by all those people singing and clapping their hands at the same time, but we’ll see.
