  • No Circus for you

We tried to take you to the circus today. We got in and you immeadiately hated the whole thing – we don’t know exactly what, the loud music or the darkness, and to top it off, the fireworks that scare you so much. Not even the horses and elephants convinced you to stay. We had to leave and luckily they gave our money back. Maybe next year…

  • Falls

You had your first and second falls almost in the same day: first you were sleeping in the couch in the family room (like you do often) and I heard a loud thump – you fell on the floor and was a bit disoriented, but didn’t really cry. Then yesterday you were sitting on my lap looking at pictures in the computer and I still don’t know how but you fell from my lap on the floor, on your back. You cried quite a bit, you were so surprised!

  • Fruits, finally

This past week you really started eating more fruit, you never really cared for fruit and just recently started trying some of them. You would eat bananas, apples and avocados on and off and you added mangoes and strawberries to the list now. A few days ago you ate a whole mango in the morning and half an avocado after dinner, that was a personal record. You have been eating more apples and entire avocados. You didn’t want to try oranges at all two weeks ago, we have to offer again.

  • Singing

You have been singing in your own words for a while, but today I could clearly hear the words, you sang “bubbles in the air” from the Gymboree bubbles song.

  • Sentences?

You said your “first” sentence today – “Lava a mão” (wash (the) hand). You were having dinner and your hand was covered in beans, since you had been picking up one by one during the meal. You looked at it and said “dodói” (hurt) and I said it wasn’t hurt, it was just dirty, to what you replied “lava a mão”. Let’s see if you will start combining words into sentences from now on or if this was another one off (like when you said “water, daddy” many months ago).

  • There are actually 5 teeth

So I was able to count your new teeth today and surprise, surprise – there are 5 of them. 3 on the top, 2 on the bottom!

  • Words

    (80) pita (pinta/paint), (81) bacate (abacate/avocado).

  • 3 (or 4) new teeth!

You were laughing today and I thought I saw a new tooth poking through your lower left gum and kept trying to see it all day. After we brushed your teeth we were telling you to open your mouth wide (say aaaaaah) and you were doing it, so we actually found 3 (maybe 4) new teeth poking out! Wow! No wonder you have been cranky and waking up at night for the past few days. Your teeth are always soooo slow to come out that we never know if you are teething or not (it literally takes months and months that we can see the tooth making its way out before cutting through). So there is a 4th tooth at the top and numbers 5, 6 and maybe 7 on the bottom.

  • 17 months

Today you turned 17 months old. You have been going to bed easier for the past month, and for the past week you actually asked to go to bed (“mimi”). I sit in one of the chairs in your room (and it has to be the same chair, or you will complain), you lay on my chest and you look at me and smile hundreds of times until you actually fall asleep. Sometimes you ask for your stuffed animals (“au au”, “urso” and “coeio”) and hug them all. But you still wake up at 5 AM every day, sometimes 5:30, sometimes 4:30. You nurse and then cuddle with me in bed until 7 AM. We’re trying to stop this but you get really mad at us. You are talking so much these days, we’re waiting for when you will start putting words together to make sentences any day now. You learn new words every day. Today you were saying (76) quente (hot), (77) braço (arm), (78) perna (leg), (79) beio (beijo/kiss). You still fight to take naps, you cry and whine and almost falls asleep while standing but don’t we dare say “mimi” or try to put you in bed or in the couch. Usually we take you for a stroller ride and you fall asleep really quickly, and you sleep there for an hour or two. We’re glad we bought the stroller that lays completely flat! You LOVE playing outside, if you could, you would be outside all day long. Even now, during the winter, you spend half of your day playing on the back or front yard. You go crazy when you see the neighbor’s kids running around and you demand we take you there too (points at the door while repeating “abre! abre! abre!” (open) over and over again). Your favorite food is hummus, you ask for it many times a day “aimussss”. And the #1 dessert is ice cream, vanilla. Chocolate pudding or strawberry ice cream don’t even get a close second.

  • Dinner, dessert, some more dinner

You have this strange habit of eating your food, then saying you don’t want any more, we give you dessert and then after you finish it off, you want to eat more food. You usually eat your entire plate like this. Today you had pasta with pesto sauce and some chicken, had applesauce and vanilla ice cream for dessert and then asked to eat some more pasta/chicken. Yesterday you had Brazilian chicken pie (empadao) and strawberry ice cream for dessert. Even before finishing the ice cream you were alternating spoonfulls of empadao and ice cream!
